Frequently asked
questions
How do I join the team?
We open applications for our New Member Projects at the beginning of every year during UNSW O-Week. All forms, applications and events will be posted on our UNSW Redback Racing Facebook. After you have been accepted into the project, the team will allocate keen students into groups and departments to work on a technical presentation over the course of 2-6 weeks, which at the end you will be formally vetted and assessed on your suitability for the team.
What degree or skills do I need to have?
We are looking for students who are keen and active participants. Having relevant engineering, business, or media degrees would be advantageous for your understanding, however it is not a requirement.
What does the commitment look like?
Building a car is no easy feat, and the process goes through several rounds of design approvals, and an intensive manufacturing stage over the course of a year. In order to communicate and upskill team members on the relevant processes, our Code of Conduct expects each member to dedicate an average of 5 hours per week to the creation of the car. These hours may be split across weekly department meetings, in-lab operations, and individual tasks. There is also weekly team Saturday meetings on-campus at UNSW Kensington, which all members are expected to attend in-person unless specified.
What does it cost to be on the team?
Other than your time, we are an absolutely free university club/society that is funded by the UNSW School of Mechanical Engineering and Manufacturing, UNSW ARC, as well as industry corporate sponsors.
What will I learn on this team?
You learn better when you do things as opposed to just hearing about them. At Redback Racing we will provide more experiences and opportunities than any university course or student project on campus. Our hands-on approach empowers you to be creative and resourceful, with limitless possibilities to deep-dive into the world of engineering and motorsport. What you put in we guarantee you will get even more out.
What is the team culture like?
Redback prides itself in our hardworking and committed nature however, we heavily emphasize social and mental well-being within the team. It is our unofficial goal to maintain a space where all students who join feel welcome and engaged, creating an experience of cherished memories and long-lasting friendships alongside technical upskilling.
